What is the cost of a Dental Implant?

Dental implants can range in price depending on the quality of work and the quality of the implant. Cheap dental implants done outside Australia, generally use materials that are inferior and eventually get rejected by the body and fail. At Woodville Rd Medical and Dental, we use state-of-the-art Implants that are precision-driven. We use newer technologies like 3D X-rays and equipment like Dental Oral Scanners to get a result that is more precise, accurate, and longer lasting than your cheaper implants. At our Merrylands clinic, we use newer technologies to make treatment more accesible and cheaper. Our Dental Implants cost $3500, which includes all the pre-scans, 3D x-ray, Treatment planning, Implant, and the crown that goes on top of the implant. There may be variations in these costs due to your specific needs but generally, the cost of Implants at our Merrylands Clinic is $3500.

How Is a Dental Implant Performed?

Dental Implants are long-term solutions to missing teeth. The newer technology of implant placement (Surgically guided), allows implant placement to be quicker, cheaper, faster, more accurate, and last longer than cheaper implants!

That being said, implants are not just placed overnight. The first step for any large process is to have a consultation. During this appointment, we will discuss options for the areas missing teeth and find the best solution tailored to your needs.

Once you are happy with this solution we will do a Dental Oral Scan and then send you off for bulk billed 3D x-ray which shows all the vital structures. From here we plan out the implant and get ready for your implant.

On the day of the implant, we will ask you to sign off on some consent forms. The procedure is usually less than an hour from start to finish. During the procedure you are completely numbed up, so you do not feel a thing. We then palace the implant and place a cover over it. This is to keep the implant undisturbed for the next 3-4 months and allow the bone and implant to join together and let the implant become part of the body. It is very important the implant is not played with and the dentist will go through with you some instructions regarding keeping the implant in good shape.

The implant journey continues 3-4 months after the implant is joined to the bone. At this appointment, we place the implant crown which is what gives the implant the normal tooth look. That’s about it.

The main thing to know is that isn’t the end of the journey. Placement is of the implant and crown that looks amazing but still requires maintenance just like the rest of your teeth. You must keep the implants in good condition and must make sure that you do your 6 monthly check-ups and cleans.

How long do the results from a Dental Implant procedure last?

Dental implants can last up to 10 years depending on how well you maintain the dental implant. The regular maintenance with 6 monthly check-ups and cleans means that Woodville Rd Medical and Dental can give a warranty on this! Cheaper implants that are usually done overseas will not see this kind of longevity and will usually fail after a few years. The issue with failing implants is that they usually dissolve the bone around the area, making placing a new implant more expensive and difficult.

What To Do Before A Dental Implant Procedure?

During your consultation, the dentist will go through the implant process with you and how to prepare for each appointment. From a patient standpoint, there is not much to prepare other than being on time and making sure that we have enough time during the consult to go through your questions and enough time during the procedure to finish with time to spare.

Tooth Whitening

Tooth Whitening

What is Teeth Whitening?

Tooth whitening or tooth bleaching is the process of lightening the color of teeth. Whitening is often desirable when teeth become yellowed over time for a number of reasons, and can be achieved by changing the intrinsic or extrinsic color of the tooth enamel. The chemical degradation of the chromogens within or on the tooth is termed bleaching.

How Is Teeth Whitening Performed?

In-office teeth whitening is the most frequently performed cosmetic dental procedure. Most procedures follow the proceeding steps:

Before whitening the teeth, a dentist will clean the teeth to remove debris and tartar. Teeth are then rubbed with a polishing paste to remove remaining debris.

A cheek retractor, a device that separates the cheeks, is placed to expose the teeth for the duration of the procedure. The patient’s teeth color is then compared to a panel of different shades of white to find the most suitable color as per the client’s request.

A dam is made around the teeth, either using a liquid gel or rubber. This protects the gum and other tissue within the mouth from the peroxide whiteners. A bleaching agent, which contains hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth and kept, to act on the stains for around 15 to 30 minutes.

The bleaching gel is then washed or suctioned off and another layer of gel is applied. This is also left to work for about half an hour. After the cycles of bleaching, the patient rinses his/her mouth and the post-procedure shade of teeth is evaluated. If the color is not aesthetically pleasing enough for the patient, a dentist may recommend follow-up visits to bleach the teeth again.

How long do the results from a teeth whitening procedure last?

The results of teeth whitening depend on the bleaching procedure used by the dentist. Stronger bleaching agents provide results that last longer. A patient’s lifestyle also determines results. People who smoke or chew tobacco often, as well as, coffee drinkers will have to go in for another procedure in a year or so.

What are the advantages of teeth whitening?

This procedure produces the quickest and safest results for whitening teeth. With the presence of thick peroxide gels and desensitizers in the whitening gel, gum and tooth sensitivity is minimal.

What are the disadvantages of teeth whitening?

In-office procedures are more expensive than at-home bleaching procedures. However, the results are long-lasting versus the several bleaching attempts a procedure conducted at home might take. Desired results also vary depending on age and the toughness of the stains present on the teeth. Finally, it is important to note that these changes are not permanent and touch-ups will be required every few years.

What are the Pros/Cons?

Pros:

  • Your confidence will increase
  • Teeth whitening gives a better and brighter smile and boosts the self-esteem of the patient.
  • The procedure leads to a lighter and even color of teeth by removal of stains; though it doesn’t make the teeth brilliant white, it can lighten the existing color by several shades.
  • Teeth whitening provides a more youthful look to the patient’s face.
  • With today’s dentist-supervised systems, even people with sensitive teeth can benefit from the procedure.

Cons:

  • An increase in sensitivity
  • Whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellow teeth will probably bleach well, brown teeth may not respond as well and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all. Be sure to discuss your clinical options thoroughly with your dentist before having the procedure done.
  • Other dental problems like cavities and gum recession need to be treated before teeth are whitened. Whitening solution can pass through decayed areas and reach the inner parts of the tooth. If your gums have receded, the exposed roots of your teeth may appear yellow or discolored. Whitening products will not make them whiter.

What Are the Temporary Side-effects Of Teeth Whitening?

Whitening is unlikely to cause serious complications. Some minor side effects that can occur are:

Sensitivity: Teeth may become more sensitive for a short while. This happens when the peroxide in the whitener gets through the enamel to the soft layer of dentin and irritates the nerve of your tooth. In most cases, the sensitivity is temporary. You can delay treatment until this subsides, and then try again.

Gum irritation: Improperly fitting trays may cause the tooth whitening gel to leak, causing gum irritation. Consult your doctor if you notice any discomfort.

Overuse of whiteners carries the risk of damaging the tooth enamel or gums, so talk to your dentist before the procedure, about the permissible extent of whitening.

Will stains return after a whitening procedure?

In the few days following teeth whitening, the teeth are most susceptible to stains. Therefore it is recommended to avoid food and beverages that could stain the teeth, for up to 48 hours after the procedure. Following this time period, patients are advised to practice good dental hygiene and make lifestyle changes that will favor the outcomes of the procedure.

Who Are The Ideal Candidates For Teeth Whitening?

This procedure provides dramatic effects based on the type of bleaching process opted for. (Laser Whitening done at Woodville Rd Medical and Dental Centre)

A patient who has had teeth stained with tobacco and food colorants generally has good results.

Patients with tougher stains might require deep bleaching as well as more frequent appointments to receive the required results.

In general, anyone with stained teeth can opt for this procedure.

Dental Dentures Available in Merrylands

Dental Dentures Available in Merrylands

What are dentures?

Dentures are false teeth that are worn to replace missing teeth. If you have missing teeth, wearing dentures can make eating and speaking easier. It can also avoid a loss of confidence in the way you look.

When you might need dentures?

If you have missing teeth, your dentist might speak to you about getting dentures fitted. Dentures are specially made to fit your mouth. If you’re missing any teeth, or you need to have teeth extracted, your dentist will recommend replacing them. Gaps in a smile can make people feel self-conscious about how they look, but there are more reasons to consider replacing a tooth than just appearance.

Missing teeth can also make it harder to eat certain foods or may affect speech. Healthy teeth that are no longer supported on one or both sides may also lean into the gap over time and go crooked, which can make them harder to brush and floss. If you lose a number of teeth, your face and jaw will lose some support, which could cause muscles in your face to sag.

There are 3 main types of dentures

  • A full denture rests on the gum and replaces all the teeth on the upper or lower jaw, or both.
  • A partial denture replaces some teeth and is held in place by clasps around the remaining teeth.
  • An implant-retained denture replaces one or more teeth and is fitted through implants in the jaw.

What happens during a denture fitting?

If you’re having your teeth removed, you might choose to have dentures inserted on the same day. This is called an immediate denture. You may need frequent adjustments as your gums heal.

The dentist might ask you if you would wait a few months before getting dentures. This allows your gums to heal so you won’t need as much adjustment once the dentures are in place.

What to expect after a denture fitting?

Wearing dentures might feel strange at first. Most people take a few months to get used to how they feel. You might need follow-up appointments so the dentist can make adjustments. After you have become used to the dentures, you’ll still need an appointment with your dentist, at least yearly, to check they fit correctly.

You’ll need to learn how to take care of your dentures daily to avoid inflamed gums or infections. The Australian Dental Prosthetist Association recommends you clean your dentures twice a day, and after eating when necessary. Use a soaking solution and only use a specially designed soft denture brush when necessary.

You should also look after your mouth, even if you don’t have teeth. Brush your gums and tongue every day and visit your dentist regularly.

What are the risks and benefits of denture fitting?

Dentures can make eating and speaking easier for most people. If you don’t replace missing teeth, the muscles in the face will sag. Dentures can help fill out a person’s face.

Most people take a few months to adjust to wearing a new set of dentures. They may feel awkward or loose at first. You might feel irritation or soreness. You might have more saliva than normal. Make sure you see your dentist if your mouth is sore, or if you have bleeding gums, swelling or ulcers. They may need to adjust your dentures.

What does dentures feel like?

New dentures may feel a little odd or loose for a few weeks until the muscles of the cheeks and tongue learn to keep them in place and you get comfortable inserting and removing them. Also, it is not unusual for minor irritation or soreness to occur and for saliva flow to increase when you first start wearing dentures, but these problems will diminish as the mouth adjusts.

Is eating with dentures difficult?

Eating with new dentures will take a little practice and may be uncomfortable for some wearers for a few weeks. To get used to the new denture, start with soft foods cut into small pieces. Chew slowly using both sides of your mouth. As you get used to new dentures, add other foods until you return to a normal diet. Be cautious with hot or hard foods and sharp-edged bones or shells. And, avoid foods that are extremely sticky or hard. You should also avoid chewing gum while you wear the denture. Also, don’t use toothpicks while wearing dentures.

Dental Filling in Merrylands

Dental Filling in Merrylands

What is a filling?

A filling is used to treat a small hole, or cavity, in a tooth. To repair a cavity, a dentist removes the decayed tooth tissue and then fills the space with a filling material. Dental fillings are a common way to treat cavities, which are areas of decaying tooth that become small holes. During a filling, your dentist fills these holes with a substance called Composite Resin.

Book Now for Dental Filling

Book Now

What can cause you to require a filling?

Tooth decay is damage to a tooth that can happen when harmful bacteria in your mouth make acids that attack the tooth enamel. This can lead to a small hole in a tooth, called a cavity. More severe decay can cause a large hole or even destruction of the entire tooth. If tooth decay is not treated, it can cause pain, infection, and even tooth loss.

When a tooth is exposed to acid frequently which can happen if you eat or drink often, especially foods or drinks containing sugar and starches. The repeated cycles of acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals. A white spot may appear where minerals have been lost. This is a sign of early decay.

Tooth decay can be stopped or reversed at this point. Enamel can repair itself by using minerals from saliva and fluoride from toothpaste or other sources. But if the tooth decay process continues, more minerals are lost. Over time, the enamel is weakened and destroyed, forming a cavity.

What does the treatment include?

There are several types of filling material currently available to repair cavities, including tooth- colored (composite) fillings and silver-colored (amalgam) fillings. Composite resin materials are increasingly used to fill teeth because many people prefer tooth-colored fillings and because composites continue to improve.

There are also treatments called crowns, used to repair badly broken-down teeth. Crowns can be made of gold or other metals, porcelain, or stainless steel (usually used on baby teeth). Generally, dental fillings and crowns do not last a lifetime.

Risks:

There are two main risks to getting fillings: infection and damage. Sometimes when you get a filling, it can pull away from the tooth which leaves a small space open. This space is an area where bacteria can get in and cause more tooth decay and infection. Cavity fillings can also break or fall out completely.

What causes the tooth to be sensitive after a filling?

Before filling a cavity, your dentist removes the decayed part of your tooth with a drill that releases heat. In rare cases, this inflames the pulp, which is the connective tissue that forms the center of your teeth, causing pulpitis. If your dentist doesn’t remove all of the decaying tissue, it can also cause an infection in the pulp of the affected tooth. When this happens, you might notice your gums swelling or a pocket of pus near the tooth.

What will it be like after the treatment?

Dentists often numb the area around the affected tooth before doing a filling. As a result, you probably won’t feel anything during the first hour or two after your appointment. Once the numbness wears off, you might notice some unusual sensations in your mouth.

These may include:

  • Pain in your teeth, especially when breathing in cold air, drinking hot or cold liquids, and eating hot or cold foods
  • Tenderness in your gums
  • Pain in the teeth surrounding the filling
  • Pain when clenching teeth
  • Pain in the affected tooth when eating, brushing, or flossing

How is a hearing test conducted and how is it recorded:

The vibration of air molecules makes up a sound wave. Gentle vibrations make a soft sound, while large vibrations create a loud noise. The loudness of sound is measured in decibels (dB). A sound’s pitch or frequency is its number of vibrations per second. This is measured in hertz (Hz).

Slow vibrations make a low-frequency sound (such as a foghorn), while rapid vibrations make a high-frequency sound (such as a whistle). Hearing tests check a person’s ability to hear sounds of different loudness and pitch. These tests are usually conducted by hearing specialists called audiologists.

Signs you may need a hearing test:

  • Ringing sensation in the ears (tinnitus)
  • People complain that you talk too loudly
  • You often have to ask people to repeat what they say
  • You fint it hard to hear conversations, especially if there is background noise
  • Others complain that you watch television with the volume turned too high
  • General Diagnostics

Types of hearing loss:

Hearing tests can distinguish the type of hearing loss, including:

  • Conductive – a sound blockage in the middle or outer ear (or both), usually caused by middle ear infections or by a wax build-up in the ear canal
  • Sensorineural – the cochlea or cochlear nerve is damaged
  • Mixed – hearing loss is caused by a combination of conductive and sensor neural problems.

Hearing loss can also be described as:

  • Congenital – when the hearing loss occurs before or just after birth. Exposure to certain diseases in utero or soon after birth can harm the hearing mechanism of the baby
  • Acquired – when the loss happens later (for example, due to disease or trauma).

The severity of hearing loss

Hearing loss is measured in decibels (dB). Conversational speech is around 65 dB. The degrees of hearing loss include:

  • Mild (21 – 45 dB) – soft sounds may be difficult to distinguish
  • Moderate (46 – 60 dB) – conversational speech is hard to hear, especially if there is background noise (such as a television or radio)
  • Moderately severe (61 – 75 dB) – it is challenging to hear ordinary speech
  • Severe (76 – 90 dB) – conversational speech cannot be heard
  • Profound (91 dB) – almost all sounds are inaudible. Most people with profound hearing loss benefit from a hearing aid.

Hearing test in Merrylands for babies and children:

Some babies are at increased risk of hearing problems. Risk factors include premature birth, low birth weight, and jaundice. The type of hearing tests used depends on the age of the child, but can include:

  • Objective tests – such as otoacoustic emission testing, auditory brainstem response testing, electrocochleography, and tympanometry do not require a response from the listener. These tests provide the most accurate indication of hearing ability in most babies aged under six months
  • Behavioral observation audiometry (BOA) – for babies under seven months of age. BOA consists of making noises, such as shaking a rattle nearby and then observing the baby’s response.
  • Visual reinforcement orientation – the baby is taught to move their head towards sound by pairing it with an interesting visual stimulus, such as a puppet. The baby will turn its head at the sound so that it can see the puppet. Their response to different sounds can then be measured. The ears can be tested individually if the baby will tolerate headphones
  • Lay audiometry – older children are taught to respond to sounds by playing a game, such as dropping marble when they hear the sound

Lip and Cheek Fillers in Merrylands

Lip and Cheek Fillers in Merrylands

What are Lip Filler or Cheek Filler?

Lip and Cheek fillers restore or add volume to your Lips and Cheek that have been lost with aging. They don’t stop the aging process, but they might help delay the need for a more invasive surgical lip augmentation, like lip and cheek implants or a lip and cheek lift. They can also help you achieve a desired look, which boosts your self-esteem. Lip and cheek fillers stimulate collagen and imbue water to the site, to create a voluminous youthful appearance.

There are various types of dermal fillers that can be injected in your lips and/or around your mouth. However, the most common fillers today are products that contain substances that are similar to hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body that helps increase the volume in your lips.

If it is your first time getting lip augmentation, usually people prefer to go with 0.5ml to 1ml to avoid full volume but just enough to make the lips look fuller and plumper. However, some clients do prefer a more voluminous look which is achievable by getting 2ml.

After the implant is inserted, a band aid or dressing is put on which should stay on for 3-5 days. The arm is bandaged to reduce bruising and this should be left on for 24 hours

How long does Implanon take to start working?

It’s immediately effective if inserted during the first 5 days of your menstrual cycle, which starts with the first day of bleeding. The implant is effective after 7 days if it is inserted at any other time in the menstrual cycle. Other contraceptive measures such as condoms should be used for these 7 days. If changing from the Pill or another method of contraception, discuss the best time for insertion with your doctor.

How long does Implanon last?

It is effective as a contraceptive for 3 years. The implant should be taken out and replaced with a new implant every 3 years. It can be removed earlier than 3 years if it is no longer wanted.

What are the benefits of getting an implanon?

  • It is highly effective.
  • It lasts a long time (up to three years).
  • It is reversible and the return to fertility is rapid.
  • It does not need you to remember to take a pill every day.
  • It is a cost-effective method of contraception.
  • It may reduce painful periods, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and acne in some people.

Many people have no other side effects. Some may experience the following problems:

  • Acne may develop, improve or get worse.
  • Weight gain can occur over time and is often thought to be caused by the implant, but has not been directly proven.
  • Headaches, breast pain and mood changes can occur and may go away after the initial few weeks.
  • Bruising and mild soreness at the site of insertion or removal can last up to 2 weeks. A small scar remains..

Our clinic fees are designed to benefit our patients. We only charge the Medicare rate (MBS rate), which means you do not have to pay anything out of pocket . Nearly all insurances (even a most basic level of cover) will cover the MBS rate at the bare minimum. Here are a few reasons to pick our clinic for your next GP visit!

  1. Zero cost GP visits !
If you are worried about the out-of-pocket payment, don’t worry, we will never make you pay to see our GP’s! We only charge what all insurances cover and claim it instantly with your insurance card, so you would never have to open your wallet. If you are unsure, give your insurance agency a call and ask if they cover the medicare rate or MBS rate. Most other clinics specifically charge an out-of-pocket expense for students and visitors because they know you have to claim it back later. If you don’t get the full amount, they usually say it is something you need to discuss with your insurance. We are not like that. We specifically aim to help our patients get the most out of their insurance. We are transparent with how we do things, so in a sign of good faith you can ask your insurance what they cover on the following GP consultations:
    • Level B consult – Item 23 – $38.75 (Consultation between 5mins -20mins)
    • Level C consult – Item 36 –  $75.05 (Consultation between 20mins -40mins)
    • Level D consult – Item 44 – $110.50 (Consultation above 40mins)
      • Updated 26/4/2021 – If prices above change due to medicare paying different amounts for these services they will be updated to the MBS rate ONLY (never more).
      • We understand most international students have it tough when it comes to living expenses, jobs, and university fees. We don’t want to make it tougher than it needs to be, which is why we try to go the extra mile for our international visitors.
  2. Direct claiming for NIB, AHM, BUPA on GP visits!
As a bonus for patients that are with NIB, AHM, or BUPA- you don’t even need to put your money on the line. We claim directly from our terminal using ONLY your private health insurance card and nothing else! This is extremely useful when you are short on cash flow and NEED to see the doctor. The other benefit is you don’t have to sit and wait to see when the insurance will pay you, or what percentage the insurance will pay! Everything is handled internally for your peace of mind!
  3. Zero Costs Pathology visits!
We go the extra mile for our international patients and make sure that they do not get charged any out-of-pocket expenses for any kind of blood tests, spirometry, ECG, or any other testing. The item numbers for pathology services are dependent on what you require to get tested, but rest assured we only partner with Pathology companies that do not charge anything extra other than the MBS rate!
  4. We are accommodating!
We have doctors that are fluent in multiple languages and can understand your exact needs. There is no need for translators who may translate incorrectly on your behalf when our doctors know the language. Our doctors can speak Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Urdu. If there are any issues with billing we are more than happy to address them!

Understanding the Medicare system for OSHC students and international visitors

We understand that there are heaps of questions behind a medicare system that OSHC students and international visitors may not be familiar with when it comes to GP consultations. Rest assured it is not as complex as you might think.

  1. Medicare covers the majority of all GP and pathology services. Medicare cards are given to PR and Australian citizens.
  2. Private health insurance is for International visitors and OSHC students to make sure they are covered for any basic health needs.
  3. When you come in for a consult as an international visitor or OSHC student, your private health insurance covers the cost of your GP visit usually up to the MBS rate. On higher levels of cover, it might cover more.
    • Some clinics recognize this and charge extra to the OSHC insurances, but usually, it’s international patients or students that end up paying that extra money.
    • We DO NOT charge any out-of-pocket expenses and only charge the MBS rate.
    • If your GP clinic has direct claiming from the HICAPS terminal then you can claim directly from the Insurance. In this instance, you won’t have to pay any money upfront. If a GP clinic is old school and doesn’t have direct claiming, then you will need to pay upfront and hope that your insurance pays the full amount (indirect claiming). In this instance, depending on the item numbers placed and how much they charged you- you may not get the full amount back.

For example

      • Clinic 1 Direct claiming (Woodville Rd Medical and Dental).
        1. After your consult, you would wipe your private health insurance card on the terminal.
        2. That is it. Job all done. Simple as that. No money exchanged.
      • Clinic 2 Indirect claiming (Generic other clinics).
        1. After your consult, the doctor will let you know which item it is and how much you will need to pay. Now, this is where it gets tricky.
        2.  If it’s a Level B consult, and you for example you are charged $70 then you must pay $70 at the counter.
          1. You will then have to send the claim to your insurance.
          2. But insurances typically only pay the MBS rate which is below (item 23 – $38.75)
          3. Which means they will only reimburse you $38.75 in a few days or a week. You would be out of pocket by $31.25.

Well, how could you know what the item was and whether there would be a gap? Who do you complain to that you had to pay $31.25? If you had asked how much the consultation was before, then you have gotten the response, “It depends on the duration of the consultation” (Scroll down for more information about consult duration and item numbers). Couldn’t he have charged me a higher-level consultation instead of a lower-level consultation? (medicare audits the time and would be illegal).
