    FAQS

    Frequently Asked Questions

You can try using a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth such as Sensodyne.

Rub a little toothpaste into the sensitive area when going to bed as it helps protect the surface.

You should try to avoid strongly acidic foods or drinks and wait at least an hour after eating before brushing as this could cause even more sensitivity.

Grinding your teeth can also increase sensitivity and a mouth guard may be necessary.
If the pain continues, speak to our dental team and they may be able to offer further care to reduce your symptoms. A number of things can cause sensitivity and our dental team will be able to identify these and advise the correct care.

FALSE! No rinsing is required! Spitting out and not rinsing leaves a protective layer of fluoride on your teeth. The same principle applies to mouth wash.

Your dentist should take a full set of dental X-rays early into the doctor-patient relationship. X-rays help your doctor monitor any changes that could be happening in your teeth between appointments. Most adult patients have bitewing X-rays every year. Our clinic provides in-house X-Rays with our own X-Ray machine. This means you do not have to go to another X-Ray clinic. We can take the X-Ray during your first consultation visit.

Having a routine 6 monthly dental clean is the first steps in to eliminating bad breath. Once the tartar and plaque have been removed, brushing and flossing remove bacteria responsible for creating odorous sulphur compounds and the food they feed on.

It’s important to brush your tongue, and you might want to consider a tongue scraper. They’re extremely effective at removing this protective mucous layer from the back of the tongue.

Discoloured or yellowed teeth can be the result of poor oral hygiene or simply due to using certain products that stain the teeth. Some of the leading offenders include coffee, tea, red wine, antibiotics and tobacco. If you’re concerned, call us today to arrange a consultation and learn about tooth whitening procedures on offer. Please visit our Teeth Whitening page for further information.

We recommend that children start to visit the dentist once they get their first tooth and no later than the age of one. Teaching children dental care from an early age gets them into good habits and makes it easier for them to maintain good oral health up to and during adulthood. We normally get the youngster to sit with a sibling or a parent mainly to make them comfortable in the dental clinical situation prior to actually even touching their teeth.

This question is at the top of our frequently asked questions list because we feel it’s particularly important.

Regular 6 monthly visits to the dentist are essential to maintain good oral health. A dental check-up enables our dentists to monitor your dental health and check for signs of diseases such as oral cancer. In addition, regular dental check-ups allow for early detection of many problems meaning simpler and less expensive dental treatment. An example is that in general, over a 6 month period, decay in a tooth has grown half a millimetre, gum disease can have already shrunken your gum by 1.5mm.

With this in mind, children, teens, and adults should visit the dentist at least twice a year. With specific dental problem maintenance such as gum disease, you might need to visit us every 3 months until the gum stabilises.

This is another of our frequently asked questions that sometimes causes confusion. We always say that if you’re getting on well with a manual toothbrush then stick with it.

If you’re regularly missing areas of plaque or have poor dexterity, then an electric toothbrush may be a better choice for you. However, we find that some patients who have moved on to using an electric toothbrush tend to lose their manual dexterity when they go back to their manual toothbrush. In these cases, we recommend using an electric toothbrush in the morning and a manual toothbrush at night.

Bleeding and swollen gums are one of the signs that you may have gum disease. This is one of the leading causes of tooth loss so it’s important to act right away. Without dental treatment, gum disease will get worse and can cause bone erosion and tooth loss – sometimes with no associated pain!

Fortunately, gum disease in its early stages can be easily reversed. Dental treatment often consists of regular scaling and root planing to remove plaque that’s stuck on your teeth. You will be shown how to improve your brushing and flossing skills too. We go through the best dental creams, toothpastes, mouthwashes and ingredients that we think are most suitable for you. With good dental care at home and regular visits to your dentist, your gums should soon return to normal

We understand that unforeseen things crop up that may cause you to have to cancel your dental appointment. If this is the case, we would like to know as soon as possible, preferably 24 hours before, so that we can reissue that appointment time to another patient. If you do fail to give notice or, don’t have a valid reason, then we may have to charge you a fee of $50.00.

An appointment is required in order for your GP/doctor to issue a medical certificate for medical conditions requiring time off work. Medical certificates cannot be backdated.

Our doctors may be running late if they are delayed with urgent or complicated cases, or if earlier patients have themselves arrived late. We thank you for waiting and apologise in advance.

We offer appointments in order to reduce the waiting times for our patients. Every effort will be made to accommodate your preferred time and doctor, however this may not always be possible. A normal appointment length is fifteen minutes. Please inform our receptionist if you require extra time or if more than one person will be seeing the doctor. Patients can also be seen without an appointment as a walk-in; however priority will be given to those patients with appointments. All patients with potentially life threatening symptoms are also given priority. Please call to cancel any appointments you cannot attend!

Most moles develop during childhood and young adulthood. They are less likely to form after the age of 25. The occurrence of moles is the result of cells within the skin grow in clusters rather than being spread out over the skin’s surface. These cells, known as melanocytes, are responsible for giving your skin a natural tone. Excessive sun exposure can result in the darkening of existing moles, particularly during the teenage years and pregnancy.

In most cases, moles are not dangerous. Signs to look for include observing moles that look different compared to others on your body. When a mole evolves too quickly there is less chance of them being benign and so should be analysed by a professional. If there are changes in existing moles’ colours, shapes or size, please speak with a specialist or doctor to evaluate them. Other warning signs to keep an eye out for include any discharge from a mole such as blood, pus, or even finding that certain moles become itchy or tender to the touch.

Surgical removal involves the use of a scalpel to break into or cut out the area of concern. Because of the nature of the procedure, this can cause some bleeding and afterwards may require stitches. This can then develop into a small scar on the affected area. In contrast, laser mole removal uses laser technology to target the mole cells and ablate the tissue. This method is relatively simpler and causes no bleeding. Laser removal is more ideal because it involves no stitches and a faster healing time. It is an efficient and simple procedure, with minimal discomfort and a faster healing rate.

Iron infusion is a procedure in which iron is delivered to your body intravenously, meaning into a vein through a needle. This method of delivering medication or supplementation is also known as an intravenous (IV) infusion.

Doctors usually prescribe iron infusions to treat iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is typically treated with dietary changes and iron supplements that you take in pill form. In some cases, though, doctors may recommend iron infusions instead.

Your doctor will give you specific instructions for preparing for your first iron infusion treatment. Some basic things you can do to be prepared on the day of your infusion include:

    • eat your breakfast and lunch, as there is no need to fast for an iron infusion
    • take your regular medications
    • know how to call for help during your infusion in case you have an adverse reaction

You may feel nervous about your iron infusion. You can help reduce anxieties by discussing the procedure with your doctor first. They can recommend ways to help you stay comfortable and relaxed during the procedure.

Call us today to book your appointment with our clinic for an iron infusion

We charge a $200 practice fee for iron infusions, this fee is not covered by Medicare and is usually not reimbursed by private insurance.

You will also have to buy the injections from the pharmacy at our clinic.

If one of our GPs has referred you for an iron infusion, then all you need to do is just book an appointment with our clinic for an iron infusion and simply arrive at the clinic at the appointment time. You will be booked with both the doctor and the nurse and then you will be guided through the process.

If you are being referred by another GP and you decide to do the iron infusion at our clinic, please carry along your blood test results or referral from your GP. We will verify these on our side and guide you through the process.

Yes, the GP will verify your blood test results/referrals and give you a prescription to proceed with the iron infusion.

Iron infusions usually take 30 mins from the moment you see the nurse. You will be idle when the injections are administered.

Please book an appointment with our GP to proceed with an iron infusion if you are pregnant as this depends from case to case and the duration of the pregnancy. It is best if you are advised by the doctor to proceed or not.
