What is Fat Loss Management and why is prescribed Weight Loss Medication by a doctor important?

Weight loss is a complex issue and each patient is different. Each patient might have different genetics, metabolism, dietary requirements, exercise requirements, medication, and state of health, which makes each Weight Loss Management important. Incorrect management of weight loss can lead to wasted effort and disappointing results. It is important to lay a good management plan for good results.

A good weight loss management plan designed by our doctors at our Weight Loss Clinic takes into consideration all the factors that influence weight gain and weight loss. One of these major players is Weight Loss Medication. Weight loss medication is prescription only and is an adjunct to conventional means of weight loss. Weight loss medication that we prescribe has shown in studies results of a 15% to 18% weight loss in adults who were overweight or obese. This is a massive change and patients definitely see the benefit.

Many weight loss techniques and programs try to avoid the adjunct of weight loss pills and in some cases, it is a warranted reason. Most times that weight loss pills are not recommended, which is when the weight loss pill is over-the-counter supplements and without the direction of a weight loss management plan created by a doctor. Weight loss medication prescribed by a doctor is very different from supplements bought over the counter. Prescribed Weight Loss Medication has been clinically tested and has proven results.

With our expert doctors, we are able to create a safe and simple weight loss management plan that is a solution to a complex and multi-faceted problem. Why do I need to do a Weight Loss Doctor at a Weight Loss Clinic?

Seeing a qualified doctor who has experience in weight loss allows you to get a tried and tested weight loss roadmap, which allows you to ensure that you are on the correct pathway.

5 Reasons to see a weight loss doctor at our weight loss clinic?

  1. Prescription Weight Loss Medication.
There are many myths about weight loss supplements, but that is not what we are talking about. We are talking about prescription medication specifically designed to help you lose weight. Getting your hands on these will require a bulk billed health assessment (Nothing out of pocket with a medicare card) and a prescription from our doctors. These prescription weight loss pills have been tested and have shown to give effective results in combination with normal conventional methods. It is important you discuss this properly with your GP to understand how effective the weight loss pills that are prescribed will be and how they play into the weight loss management plan.
  2. Referrals.
Doctors are able to refer patients to required services such as Physiotherapy, Dietitian, and Exercise Physiologists - which can all be bulk billed (Nothing out of pocket with a medicare card). These services help you to manage and maintain your weight loss management plan. Doctors also have the ability to refer you to more extreme weight loss techniques such as surgery for gastric banding, tummy tucks, liposuction, and bariatric surgery. These services help achieve rapid weight loss and can only be achieved by an experienced GP involved in the weight loss programs.
  3. Testing
Testing and assessing your health is super important to measure how much progress you have made. A weight scale, although gives some information is a poor indicator of changes in health. It usually does not take into account body composition changes, additional muscle mass, and many other factors that really determine your progress. Not being able to track progress can be problematic as you lose motivation on your weight loss journey even if you might be making progress. Doctors in our weight loss clinic have the ability to blood test for specific markers that are involved in weight loss (lipids, fat molecules, cholesterol, blood sugar levels, and many more). Doctors can also refer you to places for Fat scans (DEXA scans) which enable you to understand body composition if required.
  4. Road Map
Creating and maintaining a road map for weight loss management is very important for the overall weight loss journey. Not having a weight loss journey usually means that halfway motivation is lost or we end up going down the wrong pathway. Our weight loss doctors are experts in creating weight loss management plans that have pathways that are easy to stick to. They use a combination of medications, surgery, and conventional methods to produce exceptional results. It is important to have this plan so you are confident that you are on the right pathway.
  5. Keep you on track
Weight loss is like a see-saw, where the net calories in must be lower than the net calories out. This equation is modified by prescription medications and surgery but is important to remember during weight loss.  If you are ever confused and fraught with emotions our non-judgemental doctors are able to motivate and keep you on track.

  2. Early Detection in hidden areas

Early detection is key to minimizing cancers and their impact on a patient's life. When the cancer is found early, especially when pre-cancerous, the cancer has not moved and is quite small. As a result, the removal is quicker, efficient, and less traumatic. Recovery time is also greatly reduced. On the contrary, when cancer is left long term undetected, this can lead to death or long doses of chemotherapy/radiation therapy which negatively impact the quality of life. During your bulk-billed consultation, the doctor will assess different parts of your body that you may have trouble visualizing or feeling. This allows us to check areas and assess places that have not been seen regularly.

  3. Better Treatment

When cancers or unusual growths are found early, there is a much higher rate of curability. While melanoma is a much more serious type of skin cancer due to its aggressive growth, this type of cancer can also be cured if found early.

Merrylands Bulk Billed Varicose Vein Removal

Varicose vein bulk billed removal

Book an appointment with a GP, and get a referral to see Doctor Paramalingam Lingathas

5 Reasons to get Varicose veins removed!

  1. Aesthetics
Varicose veins can look quite disfiguring, and they only get worse as time goes by. It's a sad truth, but by leaving varicose veins unattended, the swollen vein gets worse and is harder to repair. Your options for solving varicose veins are sclerotherapy or surgery. Sclerotherapy is relatively non-invasive and can be just as effective compared to surgery in the majority of circumstances. If you are concerned about your varicose veins, read below on our process (bulk billed) on how to get rid of them!
  2. Constant pain, throbbing, and tenderness in the legs
This needs no explaining. Once it gets to this stage, it is quite debilitating. It takes more energy for your body to circulate the same amount of blood. There is of course the risks of blood clots and these can lead to dire consequences such as strokes and heart attacks. Prevent is better than cure. If you think you have varicose veins, or concerned about long-standing veins, please make a consult with our surgeon, who will assess and let you know the best course of action. We have bulk-billed these consults for your benefit.
  3. Skin sores and ulcers
Skin sores and ulcers occur as certain parts of the body take more pressure and have repeated friction. These areas are usually when the varicose veins have started to bulge and they take more pressure than other areas. This ulceration and soreness brings about more swelling and makes the varicose vein bulge more.
  4. Blood clots
As the vein gets rubbed against, it is quite fragile. Bleeding can occur internally as blood clots and can cause bruising or floating blood clots in the body.
  5. Bleeding from the veins
As mentioned previously, veins are fragile. Veins are usually wrapped inside the body and well protected. When they come to the surface, any small trauma can cause the vein to pop and this can be quite dangerous. Bleeding out is rare, but it can be quite traumatic to deal with. It is best to dissolve these veins before that cause havoc in your life. If you would like to get more information on varicose vein removal, please discuss with our bulked billed surgeon. The process is listed below.

What is really going on in a varicose vein?

Come to our Merrylands Clinic for surgical varicose vein removal. Varicose veins are enlarged blood vessels that form beneath the skin surface. The one-way valves in the veins that would normally channel the blood back to the heart do not function properly, causing blood to 'pool' in the veins. These veins can become large, painful & unattractive and can cause symptoms such as tired, heavy, aching, burning, itching or cramping legs.

Depending on the severity of your varicose veins they may be suitable for injection therapy. This procedure can be done in my rooms. No preparation is required. We will advise you on your first consultation whether your veins are suitable. If your veins are suitable you will need to purchase a pair of gradient compression stockings before the procedure being carried out. There are several brands available (Venosan, Jobst etc) and most large chemist shops carry a range.

Our varicose vein removals are performed by our talented surgical consultant, Doctor Paramalingam Lingathas.

A tiny needle is used to inject a sclerosing solution directly into the unwanted vein. The solution acts on the inner lining of the vein, causing it to shrink so that no more blood can flow through the unwanted vein. Within weeks, the unused vein is absorbed by the body & eventually becomes barely noticeable or invisible. Following injection the leg is placed in a gradient compression stocking which helps the lining of the collapsed vein stick together. As these stockings are quite hot to wear most patients have their treatments in the cooler months of the year. Patients are advised to walk following the procedure, which forces the blood to flow through other healthy blood vessels nearby. A vein may need to be injected more than once, depending on its size. In any one treatment session, a number of veins can be injected. Several sessions may be needed for any vein region, depending on the type and number of veins being treated.

Surgical Vasectomy In Merrylands

Vasectomy bulk billed

Book an appointment with a GP, and get a referral to see Doctor Paramalingam Lingathas

9 reasons to get a vasectomy over other contraceptions!

Benefits of a Vasectomy for Men:

  • Vasectomies are more effective.
    • Vasectomies are more effective than other contraceptive methods (99% effective!)
  • No need for general anesthesia.
    • A vasectomy does not require going under general anesthesia. The procedure instead, is most commonly done with simple local anesthesia. Because a vasectomy does not require anesthesia, the entire process takes Dr Lingathas only about 15 minutes to complete. There is NO general anaesthesia costs and not in hospital stay costs which can get quite pricey.
  • Lower cost than all other forms of birth control.
    • The average cost of a vasectomy is thousands of dollars cheaper than the methods of sterilization for women. In comparison, a vasectomy costs as little as under $990 at Woodville Rd Medical and Dental centre.
  • It is a one-time cost.
    • It is also worth noting that the cost of a vasectomy is just a one-time expense. With other forms of birth control, such as the pill or condoms, the price may be initially cheaper but obviously accrues with each purchase, making years of using condoms or oral contraceptives more expensive in the long run.
  • The procedure is often covered by insurance.
    • A vasectomy is covered by most insurance providers, meaning that the procedure will cost significantly less once you have met your deductible.
  • Does not affect sexual pleasure.
    • For several days directly following the procedure, men may experience some discomfort, however, from that point on a man’s orgasm will be no different than before the vasectomy. Medical professionals say the procedure will not weaken duration or intensity; sensitivity in the penis should not diminish or be affected.
  • It is a fast procedure and recovery.
    • For recovery, only 48 hours or less are required away from work.
  • The procedure is done in the doctor’s office rather than an operating room.
    • A contributing factor to the shorter procedure time and lower cost for vasectomies is the fact that the procedure can often be done in the office rather than an operating room. This signifies the simplicity of the procedure, as well as helps many feel more comfortable.
  • No scalpel vasectomies are available.
    • To even further simplify and improve recovery time, doctors have discovered a no-scalpel version of the vasectomy. This option is less invasive and has even fewer risks associated with it.

Benefits of a Vasectomy for Women:

  • Stopping hormonal birth control.
    • Every woman is different in how they react to various types of birth control, but a common side effect for many is exaggerated mood changes due to hormones. A woman is better able to regulate her mood and feel like herself when those additional hormones are not a factor. It also allows women to no longer worry about trying to remember to take a daily pill.
  • Avoiding more invasive tubal ligation.
    • As previously discussed, the procedure, recovery time, and risk factors are all much greater for tubal ligation in comparison to a vasectomy. Tubal ligation requires a visit to the hospital, an hour or longer procedure in the operating room under general anesthesia, and a potential overnight stay for monitoring. The pain throughout the four to seven-day recovery may be more significant, and although the risk is still relatively low, there is no risk to vital organs with a vasectomy.
  • Prevent failure of female sterilization, which may result in ectopic pregnancy.
    • The risks associated with pregnancy in women who have undergone tubal ligation include an uncommon occurrence of an ectopic pregnancy which may present a severe health risk to the women and an unsuccessful, painful pregnancy.

The decision to get a vasectomy as a permanent form of birth control is of course a very personal one. The best option for each person is dependent on the individual’s situation and consultation with a doctor; however, there are many benefits as detailed above to be considered for getting a vasectomy.

If you would like to learn more about the process, recovery time, benefits, and more feel free to come in for a Bulk-Billed Consult (No out-of-pocket expenses with a medicare card)!

What to expect!

Vasectomy is a surgical procedure that involves cutting the supply of sperm. It is a birth control method that is performed on a male. During this procedure, the sperm tubes are severed and the sperm can no longer make their way into the semen. Even though ejaculation will still occur during sex, there is no sperm to fertilize the female's egg, and no pregnancy can result from the sex if no sperm is present.

Initial consult:

If you are interested in undergoing the operation, you will first need a referral from a GP. Our GP's will take time to explain the entire process so that you can make an informed decision.

When you are ready, you can book your surgery with Doctor Paramalingam Lingathas.

The Vasectomy surgery:

The surgery is a relatively painless and very quick procedure.

In a conventional vasectomy, a local anesthetic agent is applied to the scrotum. The surgeon makes small cuts on the skin to access the tube that carries the sperm. The tubes are cut and little sections are removed before the tube ends are closed. Closing the tube ends is done via heat sealing or tying.

Post-Vasectomy Seminal test:

To confirm a successful vasectomy, the surgeon will collect and test the patient's semen sample, 12 weeks after the surgery is carried out. If the semen sample is confirmed to be free of sperm, then the vasectomy operation is confirmed successfully. Otherwise, more series of tests and contraceptives will be given to the patient until the semen is confirmed to be free of sperm.

After the operation

Mild discomfort will be experienced by the patient after the vasectomy operation. Some pain, bruising, or swelling can be expected, however, these will pass in a few days. For quick and complete recovery, specific instructions will be provided by your physician. Rest is encouraged for about 24 hours after vasectomy, while activities are limited for about two to three days after. The use of contraceptives is strongly advised for the first ten ejaculations or a minimum of two to three months after the vasectomy.

Surgical Circumcision In Merrylands

The most common and oldest surgical procedure is circumcision. New-born males come to the earth with a piece of skin covering the penis' head, known as the foreskin. Circumcision is then performed to remove this piece of skin. Various justifications exist for this practice, including cultural, religious, medical, and social purposes.

The time for performing circumcision varies as healthy infants can undergo the procedure 2 to 3 days after birth. Some others perform circumcision when they become much older. That is, as grown-up children or as adults.

What is circumcision?

Circumcision is the surgical procedure through which the foreskin of the penis is removed. Cutting off this shroud of skin results in the exposure of the penis. Circumcision is thus believed to enable males to keep the area around the penis clean.

A larger percentage of circumcision is performed for newborns shortly after birth. Many have it later in life, while some never undergo the procedure. Most importantly, clinics like ours only offer circumcision for people above the age of 8.

Before circumcision, consulting one of our Merryland GPs is necessary before seeing our surgeon, Doctor Paramalingam Lingathas. Our doctors will take the time to give a clear explanation of the benefits and risks of circumcision.

In some cases, you might have to wait for some time, before undergoing the circumcision. Such situations might be in cases of a premature baby, or a baby with a family history of bleeding problems, or a baby born with any problem relating to genital organ disorders. During this waiting period, written consent is required. Also, it is important to mention that the initial consult and the surgery can be done within a week.

Surgical Circumcision

Circumcision for newborns, older children, and adults follows the same procedure. For children, the child will be awake during the procedure and will be placed on their back with their legs and arms in a restrained position.

Then, an antiseptic will be used to clean up the penis, and a local anesthetic agent applied or injected into its base. A plastic ring will be attached to the penis head, after which the foreskin will be removed. After a while, the ring will fall off, and an ointment will be applied to the penis before it is wrapped in gauze. It takes about 10 minutes for a baby, while for an adult, it might take up to 30 minutes. Mobility is not affected as the patient can walk about after the surgery.

Following surgery, some discomfort occurs normally. For adults, you will be able to walk out of the clinic right away, though you will be in recovery for 3-4 days.  Urination will be normal, with no discomfort.

What causes man boobs?

Enlarged male boobs are otherwise known as gynecomastia. It occurs as a result of proliferated glandular tissue in men. Men are not born to have protruded breasts like women. Gynecomastia is caused by increased male estrogen production and decreased testosterone levels during puberty.

Alternatively, the presence of excess fat in a man's chest is another cause of man boobs.

With both cases, a simple male breast reduction surgery can alleviate men of this affliction.

What Is Involved In The Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Male breast reduction is not a general surgery carried out anywhere. It is often a specific operation carried out by a specialist surgeon. Woodville Road Medical Clinic has one such specialist with years of experience in male breast reduction.

There are two methods for a Man Boob Reduction Surgery:

  1. The Use of Liposuction

Treating gynecomastia with the use of liposuction involves the use of local anesthesia with sedation. This surgery is executed with a small incision on the sides of the chest or within the armpit. Through this, the surgeon removes excess fat and glandular tissues from the chest, and at the same time, shapes the chest to that which best fits.

Patients are given contraction garments to reduce swelling and aid quick healing. Specific instructions will be given to every patient by the surgeon to aid with for the rapid recovery of the tissues.

  1. Treating Gynecomastia Using Tissue Incision

Cases with significant sagging skin around the breast require a treatment other than liposuction. These patients are offered tissue incision.

This involves the removal of glandular tissues. Incisions are made around the creases of the chest for the removal of excess fat.

Male breast reduction surgery through tissue incision involves the use of general anesthesia. For recovery, patients are given constriction garments to reduce swelling and aid quick tissue healing.

It is vitfor patients to first see a GP for advice and to see if surgery is the best choice for you. After the surgery, follow all instructions given by the surgeon.

Allergies and Hayfever:

An allergy is the response of the human immune system to external substances, or allergens. They are contacted by touching, inhaling, eating, or injecting them into our bodies.

While Allergies are of two forms, namely indoor and outdoor allergies, they also occur either around the year or in specific seasons. There are various types of allergies. Grass and weed pollen, pets, dust mites, cockroaches, and mold spores are all common allergy triggers. Hayfever, an allergy triggered majorly by pollen, is found among 10-30% of the world's population.

Symptoms of Allergies

  • Sneezing
  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Nasal pain
  • Itching of the ear, nose, and throat
  • Postnatal drips
  • Headache

Prevention and Treatment

In general, allergies do not have a cure but could be managed. Further, the best prevention of allergies is avoiding allergens or allergy triggers. Various treatments are available, and seeing a GP or ENT doctor is recommended.

Sinusitis is also a common ENT issue that occurs due to the inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. Hence, sinusitis affects effective breathing and also makes the nose stuffy. Most times, sinusitis could either be chronic or acute. While acute sinusitis occurs for a short while (1-4 weeks) and is generally associated with cold, chronic occurs for a longer time, for instance, three months and above. Its causes include allergies, viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

  • Nasal inflammation
  • Postnasal drainage
  • Nasal congestion
  • Insensitivity to smell and taste
  • Fatigue
  • Pains
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Cough amidst many others.

Treatment and Preventive Measures:

Preventive measures include avoiding smoking, managing or avoiding allergens, maintaining proper hygiene, staying in a moist environment, and keeping a distance from individuals with respiratory challenges.

Medications are available, such as nasal irrigation using saline nasal sprays. Resting adequately, inhaling steam and using decongestant tablets are also options, and in extreme cases you may require surgery. See a GP or specialist to recommend the treatment most suitable to your condition.

Approximately 45% of adults snore, and of these, about 25% will do this often. Snoring can become disturbing to partners or other people sleeping close to a snorer. These sounds are the result of a blockage of air passage through the nose or mouth. A sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea is often connected to snoring most times. Apart from blockage of the nose and throat, snoring could also result from the use of drugs and alcohol, sleeping on your back, lack of adequate sleeping time, or being overweight.

Remedies and treatments

  • Have a sleeping schedule and stick to it
  • Always sleep sideways
  • Elevate the head of your bed a bit
  • Open your airways with decongestants(with doctor permission)
  • Change lifestyle
  • Wearing plastic in your mouth to keep your airway open

A nosebleed is the blood loss from tissues found inside the nose. Though the sight of this blood loss might be frightening, however, this is often a minor issue. There are instances where it can be a chronic issue that requires a doctor or ENT specialist. Anterior and posterior nosebleed are the common forms of nosebleed. While the anterior type is common among children and starts from the front of the nose, the other is common among adults and begins deep inside the nose. Its causes range from nose picking, allergic reaction, repeated sneezing, cold air, irritation of chemicals, fixed external item in the nose, cold air, infection in the upper part of the respiratory system, nose injury, and many others.

Prevention and Treatments

  • Avoid nose-picking
  • Blow your nose gently
  • Protect your nose during harmful activities
  • Follow nasal decongestants instructions.
