Free Hearing Test In Merrylands

What is a hearing test?

Hearing tests check a person’s ability to hear the loudness and pitch of sounds. The results are charted on a graph (audiogram) to help pinpoint the severity and causes of hearing problems. Tests include pure tone audiometry, using an audiometer, and speech discrimination tests. It is a quick test that can be easily completed at Woodville Road Medical and Dental Centre in Merrylands.

How is a hearing test conducted and how is it recorded:

The vibration of air molecules makes up a sound wave. Gentle vibrations make a soft sound, while large vibrations create a loud noise. The loudness of sound is measured in decibels (dB). A sound’s pitch or frequency is its number of vibrations per second. This is measured in hertz (Hz).

Slow vibrations make a low-frequency sound (such as a foghorn), while rapid vibrations make a high-frequency sound (such as a whistle). Hearing tests check a person’s ability to hear sounds of different loudness and pitch. These tests are usually conducted by hearing specialists called audiologists.

Signs you may need a hearing test:

  • Ringing sensation in the ears (tinnitus)
  • People complain that you talk too loudly
  • You often have to ask people to repeat what they say
  • You fint it hard to hear conversations, especially if there is background noise
  • Others complain that you watch television with the volume turned too high
  • General Diagnostics

Types of hearing loss:

Hearing tests can distinguish the type of hearing loss, including:

  • Conductive – a sound blockage in the middle or outer ear (or both), usually caused by middle ear infections or by a wax build-up in the ear canal
  • Sensorineural – the cochlea or cochlear nerve is damaged
  • Mixed – hearing loss is caused by a combination of conductive and sensor neural problems.

Hearing loss can also be described as:

  • Congenital – when the hearing loss occurs before or just after birth. Exposure to certain diseases in utero or soon after birth can harm the hearing mechanism of the baby
  • Acquired – when the loss happens later (for example, due to disease or trauma).

The severity of hearing loss

Hearing loss is measured in decibels (dB). Conversational speech is around 65 dB. The degrees of hearing loss include:

  • Mild (21 – 45 dB) – soft sounds may be difficult to distinguish
  • Moderate (46 – 60 dB) – conversational speech is hard to hear, especially if there is background noise (such as a television or radio)
  • Moderately severe (61 – 75 dB) – it is challenging to hear ordinary speech
  • Severe (76 – 90 dB) – conversational speech cannot be heard
  • Profound (91 dB) – almost all sounds are inaudible. Most people with profound hearing loss benefit from a hearing aid.

Hearing test in Merrylands for babies and children:

Some babies are at increased risk of hearing problems. Risk factors include premature birth, low birth weight, and jaundice. The type of hearing tests used depends on the age of the child, but can include:

  • Objective tests – such as otoacoustic emission testing, auditory brainstem response testing, electrocochleography, and tympanometry do not require a response from the listener. These tests provide the most accurate indication of hearing ability in most babies aged under six months
  • Behavioral observation audiometry (BOA) – for babies under seven months of age. BOA consists of making noises, such as shaking a rattle nearby and then observing the baby’s response.
  • Visual reinforcement orientation – the baby is taught to move their head towards sound by pairing it with an interesting visual stimulus, such as a puppet. The baby will turn its head at the sound so that it can see the puppet. Their response to different sounds can then be measured. The ears can be tested individually if the baby will tolerate headphones
  • Lay audiometry – older children are taught to respond to sounds by playing a game, such as dropping marble when they hear the sound

You can book an appointment with our doctors to discuss further regarding the hearing test either online via Hotdoc or you can call the practice on 02 9681 5880 to book a hearing test in Merrylands or if you have any other inquiry.

Lip and Cheek Fillers in Merrylands

Lip and Cheek Fillers in Merrylands

What are Lip Filler or Cheek Filler?

Lip and Cheek fillers restore or add volume to your Lips and Cheek that have been lost with aging. They don’t stop the aging process, but they might help delay the need for a more invasive surgical lip augmentation, like lip and cheek implants or a lip and cheek lift. They can also help you achieve a desired look, which boosts your self-esteem. Lip and cheek fillers stimulate collagen and imbue water to the site, to create a voluminous youthful appearance.

There are various types of dermal fillers that can be injected in your lips and/or around your mouth. However, the most common fillers today are products that contain substances that are similar to hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the body that helps increase the volume in your lips.

How many mL should you get for Lip Filler or Cheek Filler?

If it is your first time getting lip augmentation, usually people prefer to go with 0.5ml to 1ml to avoid full volume but just enough to make the lips look fuller and plumper. However, some clients do prefer a more voluminous look which is achievable by getting 2ml.

For Cheek fillers, usually each side will use a 1mL of a more viscous filler material to support and achieve a high cheekbone look. A total of 2mLs is a standard amount between both cheeks, but more can be added as time goes by during a review appointment.

What is the aftercare for Lip Filler or Cheek Filler?

The steps recommended for aftercare is to not do any physical activity such as sports for at least one week as well as avoiding going to the beach or sauna. Most importantly you must stay hydrated.

After the lip injection, ice may be given to ease any discomfort in the area and to also control any swelling. But no firm pressure should be put on the treatment area. We usually say do not touch or press the injection area or anywhere around it.

Lipstick or other lip products must be avoided immediately after the procedure for 24 hours.

What are the side effects of Lip Filler or Cheek Filler?

There are side effects of hyaluronic acid fillers however, they are temporary and should only last a few days. Those side effects may include:

  •  Bleeding from the injection sites
  •  Swelling and bruising
  •  Redness and tenderness at the site of the injection
  •  Reactivation of cold sores or fever blisters (herpes simplex) of the lips or area surrounding the lips

When will we see the results of Lip Filler or Cheek Filler?

The result of the procedure will be noticeable immediately and after you have healed completely, your lips should feel natural and voluminous.

Reasons to get an Iron Infusion today!

Reasons to get an Iron Infusion today!

An iron infusion may be given if a person’s blood counts are so low that taking iron supplements or increasing their daily intake of iron-containing foods would be ineffective or too slow in increasing their iron levels.

Iron is one of the minerals in the human body. It is one of the components of hemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that helps blood carry oxygen throughout the body.

If you do not have enough iron, your body cannot make hemoglobin, and you may develop anemia. This is known as iron-deficiency anemia, the most common type of anemia.

Factors that can lower your body’s supply of iron include:

  • Blood loss (caused by ulcers, some cancers, and other conditions; and, in women, during monthly periods)
  • diet that doesn’t have enough iron in it
  • Taking medications that interfere with the ability of the body to absorb iron
  • An increase in the body’s need for iron (for instance, in women during pregnancy)

What are the symptoms of anemia?

There are several symptoms that may occur in all types of anemia. They are:

If you are experiencing one of the following symptoms, please see our doctors so we can help you identify and solve the issue.

How is iron deficiency treated through Iron Infusions?

There are several ways to replace and restore iron stores in the body:

  1. Oral iron in the form of tablets or liquid
  2. Intravenous (IV) infusion.
  3. Intramuscular iron (injection into the muscle). This is painful, causes skin staining, and should be avoided.

The use of oral iron is the most common way of replacing iron and is often suitable and effective.

Oral iron is not a suitable option for everyone. The intravenous method can be considered in certain circumstances such as:

  • Difficulty taking oral iron due to side effects
  • Unable to absorb oral iron
  • Ongoing blood loss exceeding the ability to restore iron levels with oral iron
  • When there is a need to replace iron stores quickly, for example, late in pregnancy or before major surgery to avoid a need for blood transfusions
  • Individuals with chronic kidney disease receiving EPO hormonal treatment

Iron infusion is a treatment where iron is given through a vein and directly enters the bloodstream. It is also called intravenous (IV) iron. A needle or cannula is placed in the arm or the back of the hand, which is then connected to a drip with iron mixed in with a saline solution.

There are different IV iron preparations available; the most commonly used these days is Ferric Carboxymaltose. This is the most recent addition of IV iron, and the main advantage is the significantly shorter duration of infusion of no more than 15 minutes. It is also associated with a lower risk of having an allergic reaction.

Where is an iron infusion administered?

An iron infusion is carried out in a medical facility where trained health professionals can effectively manage side effects if any were to occur during or after the infusion.

No overnight hospitalization stay is necessary with iron infusions. The infusion itself takes around 15 minutes, and after the treatment, there is a period of observation before the patient is discharged.

If you need multiple treatments and there was no reaction during the first infusion, subsequent treatments may be able to be given at your home by a trained nurse, if this service is available.

How do I get started with Iron Infusions at Woodville Rd Medical and Dental?

Step 1: Make a consultation with our GP’s so they can verify that an infusion is necessary. They will require a recent blood test that they can do for you a few days before the Iron Infusion.

Step 2: Make a booking with our Nurse who will do the administration of the Iron infusion.
Note: Iron infusions carry a $200 fee outside the cost of medications (non-rebatable)

What is Fat Loss Management and why is prescribed Weight Loss Medication by a doctor important?

Weight loss is a complex issue and each patient is different. Each patient might have different genetics, metabolism, dietary requirements, exercise requirements, medication, and state of health, which makes each Weight Loss Management important. Incorrect management of weight loss can lead to wasted effort and disappointing results. It is important to lay a good management plan for good results.

A good weight loss management plan designed by our doctors at our Weight Loss Clinic takes into consideration all the factors that influence weight gain and weight loss. One of these major players is Weight Loss Medication. Weight loss medication is prescription only and is an adjunct to conventional means of weight loss. Weight loss medication that we prescribe has shown in studies results of a 15% to 18% weight loss in adults who were overweight or obese. This is a massive change and patients definitely see the benefit.

Many weight loss techniques and programs try to avoid the adjunct of weight loss pills and in some cases, it is a warranted reason. Most times that weight loss pills are not recommended, which is when the weight loss pill is over-the-counter supplements and without the direction of a weight loss management plan created by a doctor. Weight loss medication prescribed by a doctor is very different from supplements bought over the counter. Prescribed Weight Loss Medication has been clinically tested and has proven results.

With our expert doctors, we are able to create a safe and simple weight loss management plan that is a solution to a complex and multi-faceted problem. Why do I need to do a Weight Loss Doctor at a Weight Loss Clinic?

5 Reasons to see a weight loss doctor at our weight loss clinic?

  1. Prescription Weight Loss Medication.
There are many myths about weight loss supplements, but that is not what we are talking about. We are talking about prescription medication specifically designed to help you lose weight. Getting your hands on these will require a bulk billed health assessment (Nothing out of pocket with a medicare card) and a prescription from our doctors. These prescription weight loss pills have been tested and have shown to give effective results in combination with normal conventional methods. It is important you discuss this properly with your GP to understand how effective the weight loss pills that are prescribed will be and how they play into the weight loss management plan.
  2. Referrals.
Doctors are able to refer patients to required services such as Physiotherapy, Dietitian, and Exercise Physiologists – which can all be bulk billed (Nothing out of pocket with a medicare card). These services help you to manage and maintain your weight loss management plan. Doctors also have the ability to refer you to more extreme weight loss techniques such as surgery for gastric banding, tummy tucks, liposuction, and bariatric surgery. These services help achieve rapid weight loss and can only be achieved by an experienced GP involved in the weight loss programs.
  3. Testing
Testing and assessing your health is super important to measure how much progress you have made. A weight scale, although gives some information is a poor indicator of changes in health. It usually does not take into account body composition changes, additional muscle mass, and many other factors that really determine your progress. Not being able to track progress can be problematic as you lose motivation on your weight loss journey even if you might be making progress. Doctors in our weight loss clinic have the ability to blood test for specific markers that are involved in weight loss (lipids, fat molecules, cholesterol, blood sugar levels, and many more). Doctors can also refer you to places for Fat scans (DEXA scans) which enable you to understand body composition if required.
  4. Road Map
Creating and maintaining a road map for weight loss management is very important for the overall weight loss journey. Not having a weight loss journey usually means that halfway motivation is lost or we end up going down the wrong pathway. Our weight loss doctors are experts in creating weight loss management plans that have pathways that are easy to stick to. They use a combination of medications, surgery, and conventional methods to produce exceptional results. It is important to have this plan so you are confident that you are on the right pathway.
  5. Keep you on track
Weight loss is like a see-saw, where the net calories in must be lower than the net calories out. This equation is modified by prescription medications and surgery but is important to remember during weight loss.  If you are ever confused and fraught with emotions our non-judgemental doctors are able to motivate and keep you on track.

Do I need to see a doctor for prescription medications at a Weight Loss Clinic?

Top 3 Reasons to Get a Skin Check Today at a Skin Cancer Clinic!

  1. Prevention

Skin care is all about protection. When you come in for your bulk-billed skin check at our Skin Cancer Clinic, we will introduce proper prevention strategies to reduce your chances of getting skin cancer. Some of these include:
    – Reducing UV exposure (Hats, sunscreen…the basic stuff)
    – Using a reliable sunscreen (SPF 50+)
    – Avoiding tanning beds (Direct UV radiation)
    – Monthly self-checks (Where to check and how)
    – Regular skin checks (Our doctors will do the precise checks)
At our Bulk Billed Skin cancer clinic, we make sure that we are you understand how and why skin cancer checks are important.

  2. Early Detection in hidden areas

Early detection is key to minimizing cancers and their impact on a patient’s life. When the cancer is found early, especially when pre-cancerous, the cancer has not moved and is quite small. As a result, the removal is quicker, efficient, and less traumatic. Recovery time is also greatly reduced. On the contrary, when cancer is left long term undetected, this can lead to death or long doses of chemotherapy/radiation therapy which negatively impact the quality of life. During your bulk-billed consultation, the doctor will assess different parts of your body that you may have trouble visualizing or feeling. This allows us to check areas and assess places that have not been seen regularly.

  3. Better Treatment

When cancers or unusual growths are found early, there is a much higher rate of curability. While melanoma is a much more serious type of skin cancer due to its aggressive growth, this type of cancer can also be cured if found early.

Merrylands Bulk Billed Varicose Vein Removal

5 Reasons to get Varicose veins removed!

  1. Aesthetics
Varicose veins can look quite disfiguring, and they only get worse as time goes by. It’s a sad truth, but by leaving varicose veins unattended, the swollen vein gets worse and is harder to repair. Your options for solving varicose veins are sclerotherapy or surgery. Sclerotherapy is relatively non-invasive and can be just as effective compared to surgery in the majority of circumstances. If you are concerned about your varicose veins, read below on our process (bulk billed) on how to get rid of them!
  2. Constant pain, throbbing, and tenderness in the legs
This needs no explaining. Once it gets to this stage, it is quite debilitating. It takes more energy for your body to circulate the same amount of blood. There is of course the risks of blood clots and these can lead to dire consequences such as strokes and heart attacks. Prevent is better than cure. If you think you have varicose veins, or are concerned about long-standing veins, please make a consult with our surgeon, who will assess and let you know the best course of action. We have bulk-billed these consults for your benefit.
  3. Skin sores and ulcers
Skin sores and ulcers occur as certain parts of the body take more pressure and have repeated friction. These areas are usually when the varicose veins have started to bulge and they take more pressure than other areas. This ulceration and soreness brings about more swelling and makes the varicose vein bulge more.
  4. Blood clots
As the vein gets rubbed against, it is quite fragile. Bleeding can occur internally as blood clots and can cause bruising or floating blood clots in the body.
  5. Bleeding from the veins
As mentioned previously, veins are fragile. Veins are usually wrapped inside the body and well protected. When they come to the surface, any small trauma can cause the vein to pop and this can be quite dangerous. Bleeding out is rare, but it can be quite traumatic to deal with. It is best to dissolve these veins before that cause havoc in your life. If you would like to get more information on varicose vein removal, please discuss with our bulked billed surgeon. The process is listed below.

What is really going on in a varicose vein?

Come to our Merrylands Clinic for surgical varicose vein removal. Varicose veins are enlarged blood vessels that form beneath the skin surface. The one-way valves in the veins that would normally channel the blood back to the heart do not function properly, causing blood to ‘pool’ in the veins. These veins can become large, painful & unattractive and can cause symptoms such as tired, heavy, aching, burning, itching or cramping legs.

Depending on the severity of your varicose veins they may be suitable for injection therapy. This procedure can be done in my rooms. No preparation is required. We will advise you on your first consultation whether your veins are suitable. If your veins are suitable you will need to purchase a pair of gradient compression stockings before the procedure being carried out. There are several brands available (Venosan, Jobst etc) and most large chemist shops carry a range.

Our varicose vein removals are performed by our talented surgical consultant, Doctor Paramalingam Lingathas.

Treatment

A tiny needle is used to inject a sclerosing solution directly into the unwanted vein. The solution acts on the inner lining of the vein, causing it to shrink so that no more blood can flow through the unwanted vein. Within weeks, the unused vein is absorbed by the body & eventually becomes barely noticeable or invisible. Following injection the leg is placed in a gradient compression stocking which helps the lining of the collapsed vein stick together. As these stockings are quite hot to wear most patients have their treatments in the cooler months of the year. Patients are advised to walk following the procedure, which forces the blood to flow through other healthy blood vessels nearby. A vein may need to be injected more than once, depending on its size. In any one treatment session, a number of veins can be injected. Several sessions may be needed for any vein region, depending on the type and number of veins being treated.
